Abertay Historical Society
Abertay Historical Society was founded in 1947 and promotes
interest in history, particularly the history of Angus, Fife and Perthshire.
The Society organises public lectures in the Abertay area on a variety of historical topics, as well as a variety of special events including workshops, guided tours and conferences. In 2007 we celebrated our Diamond Jubilee with a major conference called Presenting the Past, involving museums, archives, archaeologists and other local history societies coming together to celebrate the public history of Fife and Tayside.
You can find out about our forthcoming programme of events in the What's On section. Most of our lectures are held in Discovery Point, Dundee, where we welcome members with wine and nibbles beforehand. We also hold special events around the area - previous venues include St Andrews Museum, the Meffan Institute in Forfar, the Fergusson Gallery in Perth and the Auld Kirk in Tayport.
For those with an interest in the history of Dundee, Perth,
St Andrews, Arbroath and the rural hinterland and who cannot attend the
lectures, it is the Society's publications which provide the greatest
membership benefit. For many years the Society has published at least
one book per year. These books are sent free to every member as soon as
they are published. Remaining copies are then sold through booksellers
and the Society to non-members. The small number remaining
in print shows the popularity of these titles. As most sell for more
in bookstores than the annual subscription fee, membership
of Abertay Historical Society represents outstanding value.
Finally, if you've undertaken
any local historical research or are considering doing so, please let
us know, as we are always interested in promoting such work. Anyone with
any particular projects or ideas should contact the General
Secretary. |
